As 2023 ends, I can’t believe that we are debt free from our consumer debt. As you can see above the only thing, we have now is the mortgage. There are arguments that you shouldn’t pay off your house or you shouldn’t own a home. From my point of view, I think generationally. If the average human lives 80 years, then I need to plan for 160 years. I look beyond my children to my grandchildren. There are four fundamental needs for every human being, and they are: food, shelter, transportation, and clothing. You can argue that health and wealth are essential in life, but we need these four items. I know when we pay off our house, our children and children’s children will have a roof over their heads. They will have to pay property taxes and insurance to protect the shelter, however they will own it for the rest of their lives, and home ownership appears to be on the decline. I do not want my future generations to ever have to worry about rising rents nor the uncertainty of shelter. Some say owning real estate creates generational wealth, and I can agree with that argument. Do they have to keep the house? No, but I would prefer they keep it until their children are old enough to decide what to do with the property. Having a lot of assets in time we will consider the proper vehicles to protect our assets, but at this time my focus is paying off the mortgage. As this year ends being debt free doesn’t feel me with excitement nor relief. I feel tired. I included the vehicle title in a Christmas card to Jill, and she asked me how I felt, and I do not know how to feel about it. I want to succeed in my new career path, but at the end of the year, I feel unready for 2024. In 2024, do you see yourself debt free?
