At the end of February, our home church opened a satellite church in our city. We had been travelling for years to another city, and it has slowly disconnected us over time due to life. Also, this month, I placed my Mom into an assisted living facility that specialized in memory care. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. I feel like a failure as a son, and I made a promise to her that I couldn’t keep. In Asian culture, typically the parent lives with the child. With two young children, it simply isn’t safe for them or for her. It wasn’t good for our marriage either. She didn’t fight or argue when she was admitted, and I explained to my children that their grandma was now in a new apartment. When she went in, it was almost like she had passed away and a weight was lifted from me.
I imagined a life where money was no option, and she had a mother-in-law suite in the back and round the clock proper healthcare. A life where she could still show my children their Thai heritage, and the reality is much harder. The love and lack of money is a root of evil to me. With a burden of debt, how has your life been limited?
